Witness trees are an amazing way for us to honor the Battle of Gettysburg. Their very existence is a representation of our history and these noteworthy events that unfolded decades or even centuries ago! We’ll use this blog to talk all about witness trees and their significance, specifically during the Battle of Gettysburg.
I use two types of Gettysburg wood - Witness and Battlefield. Witness wood is from trees that were standing during the Battle of Gettysburg (aka they literally 'witnessed' it!). Battlefield wood is from trees that have stood sentinel over the battlefield in the last 160 years.

My name is Greg and I’m so glad you’re here! Gettysburg Sentinels was founded in 2007 by my long-time friend, fellow woodworker, and former Army Lt. Colonel, William D. Hewitt. After retiring from a 40 year career at a company I founded with my wife, I took over Gettysburg Sentinels to continue the legacy that not only Colonel Hewitt created, but that of those that came long before us. This blog will serve as an educational platform that contributes to this central purpose.
A Bit More About Me
Woodworking has been ingrained in me for the better part of my life. I dedicated over 40 years of my life to practicing my craft and highly enjoyed what I did each day. I felt a whole new world open for me once I acquired Gettysburg Sentinels from Colonel Hewitt.
The types of wood used to make our products are unlike any that I’ve worked with before. Learning the specific woodturning and engraving style was the easy part. The hard part was finding the unique dance that this specific wood required. With twisted branches and split or rotten boards, it’s both an intimidating and mesmerizing material to work with.
Although quite daunting to hold the fate of such irreplaceable pieces of history, I couldn’t help but feel immense respect for the purpose I was contributing to. I take great pride in the pieces I craft and all that they stand for, both individually and collectively.
My Goals for This Blog
I hope that this blog can act as another way that we can carry the legacy of the Battle of Gettysburg and it’s timeless stories. I also want to help educate new generations while continuing to connect with the incredible people that support Gettysburg Sentinels and all that it offers. My goal is to fuel this beautiful echo of respect through the products I make and the community that this blog is building.
