Chaplain Horatio Howell

On the afternoon of July 1, 1863, Chaplain Horatio Howell was shot by a confederate soldier at his church entrance. The church was serving as a field hospital. After hearing shots outside, Howell stepped out to assess the situation. Howell was in uniform. A Confederate skirmisher arrived at the foot of the church steps. Believing Howell to be an officer, the soldier called on the chaplain to surrender; but Howell attempted to he was a noncombatant, when a shot from the skirmisher's rifle. Howell was 42.
